Ruth Whisnant Beck 81, of Spainbour Road, Morganton died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, following an extended illness. Born July 13, 1918, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late J. Lloyd Whisnant and Ellie Mae Smith Whisnant In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Conley Luther Beck: brothers, Ray, Howard, Carl, Ned and Owen Whisnant; and a sister, Doris Allman. She worked for several years at Home Laundry in Morganton and was a member of Oak Hil1 United Methodist Church. Surviving are: a son, Luther Ray Beck and his wife, Christine of Morganton; brothers, Charles J. "Sonny" Whisnant and Max G. Whisnant, both of Morganton; sisters, Letha W. Benfield, Louise W. Dale, Vernie W. Chapman and Faye W. McCoy, all of Morganton, and Muriel W. Smith of Sylva; grand-children, Johnny Beck and Pattie Beck Harlow; great grandchildren, Patrick Harlow and Scottie Harlow; a number of nieces and nephews; and numerous fiends. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at Oak Hi11 United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Gay officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral hour. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 2431 Spainhour Road, Morganton or at the residence of a sister, Verge W. Chapman, 2356 Spainbour Road.
