Robert A. Karo Whisenhunt
Funeral for Robert A. "Karo" Whisenhunt, 85, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Frankye Johnson, pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiating.
Mr. Whisenhunt died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, in Lawton.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Veterans Field of Honor.
He was born July 15, 1918, in Caddo, to Sherman and Della Lee Whisenhunt. He worked on the family farm before enlisting in the Marine Corps on Sept. 14, 1940. He served during World War II and was in Iceland when the war started. He participated in operations at Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands, Tarawa, Gilbert Island and Abemama Atoll. His awards included the Silver Star Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with two stars, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific with two Stars, the European Area Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged Nov. 22, 1946, at Oklahoma City. He married Ophelia W. Damron on April 27, 1945, in Durant. He came to Lawton in 1949 and worked as a carpenter for 50 years. He was a carpentry instructor for the Job Corp for many years and retired from the Job Corp in April 1982. After his retirement he drove a school bus for Lawton Public Schools. He was a lifetime member of the Carpenter s Union.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters: Sharon Kay Lash, Burkburnett, Texas; and Belva Lee Chambers and her husband, Randy, Lawton; two grandsons: Matthew Chambers, Lawton; and Ted Lash, Burkburnett; a granddaughter, Mandy Lee Wells and her husband, Eric, Fort Sill; a great-grandson, Tyler Wells, Fort Sill; and several nieces and nephews.
