Spurgeon L. Whisnant

HICKORY - Mr. Spurgeon L. Whisnant, 73, of Hickory, went to his Heavenly home Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at Catawba Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health. Mr. Whisnant was born Aug. 5, 1935, in Catawba County to the late Jesse Monroe and Katie Smith Whisnant. He was a faithful member of Faith Olive Baptist Church and retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture Co. Surviving are his wife, Betty Jo Poarch Whisnant of the home; three daughters, Catherine Stallings and husband, Larry, of Vale and Barbara Berry and husband, Gene, and Brenda Willis and husband, Mark, all of Hickory; three sons, Donald Whisnant of Hickory, Robert Whisnant and wife, Junitta, of Conover and Garrett Whisnant of the home; one brother, J.M. Whisnant of Valdese; and two sisters, Helen Shuford of Hickory and Stella Gibson of Icard. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Elizabeth Withers and Hanah Whisnant, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Spurgeon L. Whisnant will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Faith Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Houser officiating. Interment will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Faith Olive Baptist Church.
