Former Police Chief of City of Blacksburg
BLACKSBURG – Gideon Leonard Whisonant, 84, of 305 E. Lime St., died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Restorative Care, Spartanburg,
Born in Cherokee County, he was a son of the late William L. and Iver Mitchem Whisonant and was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church. He was a veteran of World War II and former Police Chief for the City of Blacksburg.
Surviving are a son, Leonard Gideon Whisonant of Spartanburg.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. Dennis W. Funderburk. Burial, with military rites, will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church Saturday at 1 p.m.
Pallbearers will be members of Blacksburg and Gaffney police departments.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. Bernard Smith, 105 Woodlawn Dr., Gaffney.
