Mollie Whisenhunt
ORANGEBURG - Mollie Geneva Lee Whisenhunt, 82, of 1000 Methodist Oaks Drive, Orangeburg (formerly of Neeses Highway), passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2010, in The Methodist Oaks. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at St. George Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg. The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service. The Rev. Wayne H. Reeves will officiate. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg is in charge. Pallbearers will be Dr. Jarrette Burckhalter IV, John Dantzler, Matthew Lee, Freddy Lee, William (Lane) Whisenhunt Jr. and Joe Dupree.
Mollie Lee was the last surviving child of Stanmore Sawyer Lee and Maude Walton Lee. She was born September 9, 1927, in Orangeburg County, SC. She graduated from North Greenville Junior College in 1948 and from Furman University in 1952; she attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1958; was youth director of First Baptist Church, Greer, SC, in 1952, educational director of Northside Baptist Church, Orangeburg, from 1953-1958; secretary for Estate Life Insurance Company and Hygrade Meat Products, Orangeburg, from 1958-1963. She was a homemaker and partner in Dairy Equipment Co.; organist and church clerk at St. George Baptist Church for 40 years; a Sunday school teacher, and active in multiple other positions including church media director; a member of Edisto Fork Grange, county director for Orangeburg Homemakers Extension Club and Council. She was the widow of the late Nortise Eugene Whisenhunt and was preceded in death by two babies, 'Little' Gene Whisenhunt and Robbie Ann Whisenhunt; brothers, Sawyer, George, Walter, Wilson, Johnny and Herbert; and two sisters, Lucile and Nellie.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula W. (Harry) Shroat III of Orangeburg; a son, Lee S. Whisenhunt and friend, Kay Byrd, both of Orangeburg; grandsons, Harry L. 'Buddy' Shroat IV of Orangeburg, Kevin Whisenhunt of St. Matthews; great-grandchildren, Gavin Whisenhunt, Quinn Whisenhunt, both of St. Matthews; special niece, Joan Brooker Dupree of Orangeburg; sisters-in-law, Joyce Jones and Evelyn Whisenhunt, both of Orangeburg, Cartha E. Lee and Leslie Lee, both of Columbia, Margaret Acree of Charleston; many other nieces, nephews and family members.
Friends may call at the residence of Harry 'Mike' and Paula Shroat III, 905 Neeses Highway, Orangeburg, and at the funeral home.
Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2010, at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.
