Maynard Whisnant

Maynard Ray Whisnant, 68, of Calico Road, Lenoir, passed away Friday, July 15, 2005, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.

Mr. Whisnant was born Jan. 3, 1937, in Caldwell County to the late Gordon Whisnant and Ercell Phillips Whisnant Barns. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Gene Whisnant; one grandson, Gary R. Whisnant Jr.; and a beloved mother-in-law, Mrs. Carl (Bertha) Gilbert.

He served in the United States Army for three years in Nuremberg, Germany. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and also a construction worker in Atlanta, Ga., for 29 years. He enjoyed life with his family and Nascar racing and collectibles.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mrs. Emma Gilbert Whisnant of the home; three sons, Raymond Whisnant of Lenoir, Gary Whisnant and wife Sandy of Sawmills, and Doug Whisnant of Lenoir; six grandchildren, Kyle Whisnant of Charlotte, Nick Whisnant of Lenoir, Mrs. Heather Kirby and husband Jonathan of Lenoir, Paul Whisnant of Lenoir, Christopher Whisnant of Kennesaw, Ga. and Lance Whisnant of Lenoir; one great-grandchild, Keaton J. Kirby of Lenoir; two step-grandchildren, Matthew Johnson and Michael Puma of Sawmills; one brother Mr. Boyd Whisnant and wife Margaret of Lenoir; and his beloved father-in-law Carl L. Gilbert of Lenoir.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Kevin Broyhill and Hugh Whitfield. Interment will follow with military honors at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Monday, July 18, 2005, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Whisnant, Nicholas Whisnant, Kyle Whisnant, Christopher Whisnant, Jonathan Kirby and Rodney Marler.
