Lorette Whisenant

Loretta Elizabeth Whisenant, 101, of Maricopa, Ariz., died July 11, 2005, at Desert Pavilion in Casa Grande, Ariz. Mrs. Whisenant was born June 9, 1904, in White Plains, N.Y., to Frank and Elizabeth Mayer Hopps. She attended Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City and became a registered nurse in 1924. She did social service and hospital work at the Tarrytown Hospital tuberculosis clinic and follow-up work at White Plains clinics. She also worked at Neighborhood House in Tarrytown and started and directed a medical clinic at Tarrytown Hospital. She worked for the Red Cross during World War II. She retired as director of nurses at Causeway Manor Nursing Home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She served on the board of the Glenrock Senior Citizen Center from 1988-97 and was Volunteer of the Year in 1993. She was chair of the Glenrock Senior Citizen Housing board in 1992. She was a member of the Wyoming Silver Haired Legislature and of Converse County Homemakers. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crafting, gardening, drawing and painting. She moved to Maricopa to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Lucile and George Akers, in 1998. She entered Desert Pavilion in 1999. In addition to her daughter, survivors include a son, Frank J. DesChamps Whisenant of Florida; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John R. Whisenant, in 1956; three sisters; and a brother. No service is planned.
