FLORENCE — A memorial service for Bernetta Netta Lewis Whisnant, wife of Gene Whisnant, will be at 2:00PM, Saturday, July 26, 2008, in Cain Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Harley. Mrs. Whisnant, 79, of Florence, died Thursday, July 24, 2008, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born September 17, 1928, in Northern Neck, VA, to the late Jennings Beale and Mayfield Northen Lewis. She was also predeceased by a sister, Kitty Martin.
Mrs. Whisnant attended Westhampton Womens College, Richmond, VA. She was a member of First Baptist Church for many years and was a Sunday School teacher. She was active in Democratic Party politics on the local and national level and attended several National Conventions. She was also a former chairwomen of Voter Registration and worked at the Courthouse Voter Registration Office in years past. She was primarily a homemaker, but worked at Bruce Hospital for several years. She was also a member of the American Contract Bridge League.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are: daughters, Jill (Tom) Valesky of Bonita Springs, FL and Joy Whisnant Pereira of Wilmington, NC; granddaughter, Morgan Pereira of Wilmington, NC; brothers, J. B. Lewis of Williamsburg, VA, and Luttrell Lewis of Locust Hill, VA.
