Melodene Spivey
VALDESE - Mrs. Melodene "Jean" Spivey, 80, of Granite Falls, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at Camelot Nursing Manor, following a period of declining health. Melodene was born on May 19, 1930, in Burke County to the late Elbert Bostic Whisnant and Jessie Small Whisnant. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Valdese, and her love for music was evident as she participated in the Greensboro Oratorio Society, the adult choirs from Florida Street Baptist, Asheboro Street Baptist, Friendly Avenue Baptist in Greensboro and the First Baptist Church, Valdese. She was also active in women's circles and helped direct youth choirs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Juanita Whisnant, Marie Henley and Florence Rhyne. Survivors include her husband, James William Spivey of Granite Falls; her son, David William Spivey and wife, Rita, of Hickory; grandchildren, Jordan Brett Spivey and Brooklyn Meredith Spivey of Hickory; her sisters, Margaret Pressley of Gastonia, Eloise Bedford of Valdese and Clara Ware of Greensboro; and one brother, Wilson Murray of Lenoir. Also surviving is a special niece, Judy Robbins of Hildebran; special friend, Betty Noell of Danville, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Valdese with the Rev. Noel Schoonmaker and the Rev. Timothy Horldt officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 until 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Valdese. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, Valdese, 500 Faet St., Valdese, N.C. 28690; or to Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care, 902 N.W. Kirkwood St., Lenoir, N.C. 28645.
