Lucy Yoder
Mrs. Lucy Geneva Whisnant Yoder, 93, of Hildebran, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Catawba Valley Hospice & Palliative Care, following a period of declining health.
Lucy was born on July 29, 1917, in Catawba County, to the late Robert L. Whisnant and Genevieve Whitener Whisnant.
Lucy retired after working in the furniture and textile industries which allowed her to increase her involvement in the community. She was a member of Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church in Hildebran. Over the course of a long rich life, Lucy found joy in serving both her church and neighborhood. She participated in her church women's groups, Sunday school and vacation bible schools. Lucy was also an active volunteer during the development of East Burke Christian Ministries.
Friends, family and neighbors would often find comfort during visits from Lucy sharing her apple pies, persimmons pudding or fresh baked bread.
Survivors include four daughters, Jennie Reece of Greensboro, Laura Alexander and her husband, Danny, of Caldwell County, Martha Zimmerman and her husband, Bryan, of Marion and Catherine Parker and her husband, Robert, of Dana Point, Calif., one son, Charles Yoder and his wife, Denise, of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Anna, Alicia and Adam Alexander, all of Biloxi, Miss., Emily Parker and Hugh Parker of California; cousins, numerous nieces and nephews.
Lucy's children would like to recognize and thank all her loving caregivers who became part of her extended family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus Earl Yoder; three brothers, Fred N. Whisnant, David M. Whisnant and Henry L. Whisnant; and a son-in-law, Douglas Reece.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church, 103 Main Avenue East Hildebran, with the Rev. Russell Makant officiating.
Interment will follow at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.
