Harley Whisnant
MORGANTON Harley Whisnant, 74, of Morganton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville. Born in Burke County, on Aug. 1, 1936, he was the son of the late John Ray and Minnie Pearl Whisnant. Harley was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and was a local dog trainer. Harley is survived by his wife, Sharon Powell Whisnant of the home; daughters, Roxanne Rae Whisnant and Rita Kay Tallent, both of Morganton; a son, Tony Hawkins of Morganton; grandchildren, Miranda, Chelsea, Harley, Layla, Greg, T.J., Tabitha, and Casey; and great-grand-daughters, Alivia and Makenzie. In addition to his parents, Harley was preceded in death by a son, Derrick Hawkins, and a sister, Frances Terry. A celebration of Harley's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Fairview United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Stephenson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 until 3 p.m on Sunday. Military honors will be provided by the N.C. National Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sossoman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 2608, Morganton, NC 28680 to help with funeral expenses.
