Mrs. Nancy Whisnant Fowler
Mrs. Nancy Whisnant Fowler, 75, of Amherst Avenue, died Friday, July 8, 2011 at Edgewood Place after several years of failing health. Born in Hickory, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Nan Whisnant and was married for 39 years to Ray Fowler, who survives. She graduated from Meredith College. During her early professional career, she taught children for 3 years in Tripoli, Libya, North Africa. She served as a Social Services Program Analyst and Program Consultant and her career concluded as a Child Care Consultant for the N.C. Division of Child Development with many years of dedicated service to the children of North Carolina. As a result of her tireless work to improve child care in the state, she received the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine award presented by Governor James B. Hunt. She was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church. In addition to her husband, Ray, of the home, she is survived by their son, Mike Pittard, his wife, Jean, and their children, Drew and Sarah of Whitsett; her sister, Linda Harris of Burlington; and her nephew Britt Irwin and his wife, Mary Stuart of Chapel Hill. A memorial service will be held at Macedonia Lutheran Church on Tuesday July 12, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. The family would like to thank the staff at Edgewood Place for their care and compassion.
