Marie Whisenhunt Bates

Marie Bates, 94, of Mena, Arkansas, died Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Rich Mountain Nursing Rehab in Mena.

She was born Tuesday, July 12, 1915 to Robert William and Mary Lee Harris Whisenhunt in Hatfield, Arkansas.

Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, farming, and working in her yard; some people said she had the cleanest yard in Polk County. Her flower beds were full of different varieties of flowers.

She was a member of the West Boundary Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Russell Bates; her daughter, Mary Hobbs; six brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors included one son; one brother; one sister; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at Hall Funeral Service Chapel in Mena with Jack Avaritt officiating. Interment followed in Six Mile Cemetery in Hatfield.

Visitation was Friday, November 20, 2009 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Hall Funeral Service Chapel.

Pallbearers were Ted Dunavant, Don Frost, David Donica, Jerry Hansbrough, James Gentry and Harold Richmond.
