Ruby C. Whisnant
ASHEBORO — Mrs. Ruby Lee Chapman Whisnant, 98, of Asheboro, N.C., died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Cross Road Retirement Community.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. John Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Asheboro.
A native of Cliffside, N.C., Mrs. Whisnant was born July 8, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Robert Goin Chapman and Rosa Nolan Chapman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whisnant was preceded in death by her husband, J.E. Whisnant.
At around 14 years of age, Ruby’s mother died, so she went to work in a mill and kept house so that her other brothers and sister could continue school. Her brothers became ministers. Ruby began to teach little children in Sunday school and continued teaching for the next 54 years. Many of those years at First Baptist Church, she also served as Deaconess. When she had children of her own, she stayed home with them until they were in school. Then Ruby started working at Lindley Park School in the cafeteria so she could be home with her children. Later, she worked at Acme-McCrary Hosiery Mill, Asheboro Hosiery, Mayberry’s, Camp Caraway and Bossong Hosiery. After retiring, Ruby spent the next 21 years making biscuits at The Biscuit Company. Everyone loved her biscuits. She said that she put a “love” tap in making them. She retired again at the age of 84. God, her church and having something good to eat for everyone have always been important to her and has been her greatest testimony. Her biscuits and her famous pound cake will be missed.
Mrs. Whisnant is survived by her daughters, Janet W. Harllee and husband, Robert, of Asheboro, N.C., Carol W. Lamm and husband, Ralph of Kernersville, N.C.; grandchildren, Sharon Lamm Williams, Brad Lamm and wife, Heather; great-grandchildren, Caleb Williams and Cason Lamm.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at First Baptist Church; and other times at the home.
