J. G. Whisnand
J.G. Whisnand, 93, of College Station, Texas passed away Monday, December 16, 2013 and leaves behind a lineage of faith in Jesus including his wife of 65 years, Lorna Whisnand.
Born September 13, 1920 in Ryan, OK, he was the son of Odie Emanuel and Linnie Whisnand. He proudly served his country as a member of the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated in 1946 from North Texas State University with a B.S. in Economics and Government and was named to "Who's Who" Among American Universities & Colleges. Along with his father, he was a prominent business and civic leader throughout a long and distinguished professional career that spanned everything from real estate to law enforcement. Along with many professional organizations, he proudly served as an as an elder at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Gainesville.
J.G. retired in 1987 and moved to College Station in 1996. He worshiped at the A&M Church of Christ and remained busy as an "economist & story-teller," proudly relating tales about his loved ones to "anyone." He was a proud son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He cherished the opportunity to share a cup of coffee and his faith in Jesus with those he encountered.
Besides his bride, survivors include his son, Galen Whisnand and wife, Sharon, of Austin and daughter, Dana Grove and husband, Foree, of College Station. He is known as "PaPa" by his five grandchildren and five great-grandsons: David and Sarah Grove and sons, Zachary, Montana and Stephen of New Braunfels; Stephen and Brianne Grove and son, Lincoln of College Station; Deborah Grove Donaldson and son, Klayton Trice of Austin; Zachary and Myra Whisnand of Austin and Maxwell Whisnand of Toronto, Ontario.
A private family service will be held at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, TX, before his burial in the Whisnand family plot at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville, TX.
