Charles Alfred Whisnant, age eight, was killed instantly Tuesday morning when he was struck by an automobile.
The tragedy occurred in front of the child's home on Highway 164, 1 mile west of Denton. The school bus was stopping to pick up the Whisnant children when Charles was struck by a 1953 Buick driven by Russell Langston, 63, of Rives. He was thrown 63 feet, landing in a ditch. He died instantly of a broken neck.
The accident was investigated by the Missouri Highway Patrol and Mr. Langston was charged with careless and reckless driving and not having an operator's license. Joe Morton was driving the Steele school bus.
Funeral service was held at the Chapel of the German Funeral Home in Steele Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. J. F. McCrary, pastor of the Steele Baptist Church, officiated. Interment was in the Mount Zion Cemetery with German Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were students of the Steele Grade School.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Coy Whisnant; five brothers, Joe and Sid White; Donald Lee, Carroll, and Billy Whisnant of Steele; three sisters, Betty Kay, Geraldine and Nancy Whisnant of the home.
