John Richard Whisenant

John Richard Whisenant, age 93, of Lenoir, died Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Westwood Hills Nursing Home. He was born May 25, 1920 in Catawba County to the late Ed B. Whisenant and Claudie Teague Whisenant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Marcus Whisenant, Elisha Whisenant and Thomas Whisenant; and one sister, Elsie Bowman.

Mr. Whisenant was retired from the furniture industry. He was a charter member at Zack's Fork Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He also was a United States World War II Navy Veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Richard J. Whisnant of Sumter, S.C. and Bobby Whisnant and wife Diane of Springhill, Tennessee; one daughter, Jeanette Rackley and husband James of Lenoir.; one sister, Peggy Childers of Pensacolo, Florida; grandchildren, Janet Rackley, James Rackley Jr., Chris Whisnant, Jeff Whisnant, Daniel Whisnant and Jessia Whisnant.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Zack's Fork Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jobie Borders. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.
