Marjorie Whisenhunt Hobgood

Marjorie Whisenhunt Hobgood, a native of Claremore, Okla., died March 20, 2014. Born July 20, 1921, she was the daughter of Noah Whisenhunt and Elsie Whisenhunt Chiles, popular treasurers of Rogers County in the 1930s and 40s. She was a graduate of Claremore High School and attended Oklahoma Baptist University. Mrs. Hobgood was a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

She began her secretarial career with the Far Eastern Division of the State Department on the eve of the Second World War. She retired from the Animal Science Department at NCSU in 1983.

Mrs. Hobgood blessed others with her sunny disposition and unique wit, brightening the lives of her family, friends and members of the Etta Pruden Sunday School class, which she taught for many years.

Later in life, she served as an ambassador for the Friendship Force in India, China and Japan, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Americus, Ga.

She is survived by her son, W. Sands Hobgood of Chapel Hill, N.C., Margaret H. Martin of Raleigh, four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by husband William S. H. Hobgood and youngest son James Wingate Hobgood.

A service of remembrance will be held in the chapel at Forest Hills Baptist Church, Raleigh, on Monday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
