Edith W. Hanna
MORGANTON - Mrs. Edith Phifer Whisnant Hanna, 84, of Oak Hill, went to be with the Lord, Monday, June 14, 2010, while at her residence. Born Nov. 2, 1925, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond Presnell Whisnant and Lily Alice Denton Whisnant. She graduated from Morganton High School. Mrs. Hanna was a member of the Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder. She retired from J. Iverson Riddle Development Center (formerly Western Carolina Center). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Sidney Lester Hanna; an infant daughter, Barbara Ann Hanna; son-in-law, Gary "Pete" Mabrey; and grandson, Brian Lee Mabrey. Also, sisters and brothers, Emma W. Greenhill, Benjamin Harrison Whisnant, Junie W. Buchanan, Mamie Dellinger Smith, Raymond Herbert Whisnant, Iverson Whisnant, Ivey Whisnant and Lena Pendergrass. She is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Hanna, of Bowie, Md., Ruth Mabrey of Connelly Springs, Carolyn Yoder and husband, Winston, of Hickory; two sons, Merle "Gibby" Hanna of Marion and Michael Hanna and wife, Jennie, of Morganton; 12 grandchildren, Lisa Walker, Belinda Kijeski, Kelly Wayne Stilwell, Danielle Lee, Ricky Pack, Carol DeLuca, Becky Proctor, Merle Hanna Jr., Jamie Hanna, Jason Yoder, Joey Yoder and Wally Hanna; 18 great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Edith W. Hanna will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2010, in the chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Morganton, with the Revs. Lex Wright and Raymond Spann officiating. Interment will follow at the Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to may make memorials in Mrs. Hanna's memory to East Burke Christian Ministries, P.O.
