HARRY L. WHISNANT

Harry L. Whisnant, 89, of West N.C. 10, Newton, died June 2, 2001, at his residence. Born Aug. 12, 1911, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Robert L. “Bob” Whisnant and Genevieve Whitener. A lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, he retired as the owner of Whisnant Grocery after 41 years. He also was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Whisnant, and two brothers, Fred Whisnant and David Whisnant. Survivors include his wife, Lucile White Whisnant; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Carolyn Whisnant of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and John Wyant of Vale; a sister, Lucy Yoder of Hildebran; six grandchildren, Donna Pickens of Terre Haute, Ind., Angie Landers of Lincolnton, Michelle Whitener of Vale, and Wendy Dorsey, Eddy Wyant and Brandy Whisnant of Newton; five great-grandchildren, Alexandra Pickens, Morgan Dorsey, Nolan Whitener, Zeke Landers and Nash Whitener, and an unborn great-grandchild. The funeral will be conducted by Dr. Larry Yoder at 3 p.m. Tuesday at his church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
