JACKSON C. WHISNANT Sr.

FLORENCE, S.C. - Jackson Cameron “Jack” Whisnant Sr., 81, of Florence, died late Sunday evening, Jan. 9, 2005, at Bethea Baptist Home after an illness.

Mr. Whisnant was born in Newton, N.C., a son of the late Harvey O. and Effie Grady Whisnant.

He attended Lenoir-Rhyne College and graduated from Madison University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars. He retired in 1977 as a sales engineer with Southern Bell Telephone Co.

He was a former member of the Florence Jaycees, a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3181, a member of the Telephone Pioneers and member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he had been a member of the adult and sanctuary choirs and was a former deacon.

Mr. Whisnant was a life member of Amity Lodge No. 240 A.F.M., having served that lodge for 40 years. He was a life member of the York Rite Body, a life member of the Omar Shrine, a life member of the Omar Imps and a member of the Pee Dee Shrine Club. He had served as past chaplain for the Omar Shrine, the Omar Provost Guard and for S.A.S.A.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Calvary Baptist Church.

Entombment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum with masonic rites.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Foster Whisnant; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Powell.

Surviving are a son, Cameron (Sandra) Whisnant Jr. of Darlington; two daughters, Dare (Ronnie) Chapman of Florence and Donna (Steve) Powell of Hollywood, S.C.; a sister, Charlotte Cahoon of Vienna, Va.; and six grandchildren, Parker Whisnant of Darlington, Chris Chapman of Atlanta, Ga., Heather Chapman, Adam Powell and Josh Whisnant of Charleston and Megan Powell of Hollywood, S.C.
