Manly Whisnant

Manly Hamilton "Hamp" Whisnant, 85, of Lenoir Street, Morganton, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at his home. Born Jan. 12, 1925, in Burke County, he was a son of the late William James Whisnant and Bertha Mae Harris Whisnant. He was a retired engineer with the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the U.S. Navy. He loved to walk and garden. Mr. Whisnant is survived by daughters Phyllis Smith and her husband, Jay, and Karen Butler, and her husband, Glenn, all of Morganton; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul Whisnant and Melvin Whisnant; and sisters, Dorothy Moose, Betty Abee, Alice Shull and Sarah Bowman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sons Garry Whisnant and Christopher Whisnant; and brothers, John, Dan, Bill and Bobby Whisnant. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Assembly of God with the Rev. Mike Whisnant officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside honors provided by U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at Mr. Whisnant's home. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
