John Kent Whisenand was born 13 July 1931 in Elbert Colorado. He was born at home in a sod house known to the family as the Becker Place. Myra Allison was present at his birth. Myra was married to Hattie's brother Alvin. His mother, Hattie Whisenand, lived in the sod house with her other children, Elita, Marion, Keith & Ordway. Sharold Allison had left the family earlier in 1931 while they were living in Canon City Colorado. In June of 1931 Alvin Whisenand went to Canon City to bring Hattie and the children back to the family homestead in Elbert County. My Dad and his mother, sister and brothers lived with Granny & Pop on the homestead. He told me many stories of his childhood. It was not an easy life in the 1930's. I do not ever remember my father complaining of the childhood he had. He told me of Christmas' where they got an orange and of a birthday when he got a small toy car that he lost in the walls of the homestead. Sometime during the 1960's we went to the homestead. The house was no longer standing and Dad found his small treasures that had been lost between the walls. Aunt Myra also found some of her "lost" treasures then too. I remember we found a skelatin of a small snake and a mouse.
Dad married mother, Marilyn Sue Young on November 12, 1954. He had been working at the gas station on the corner of Quincy & Broadway in Englewood Colorado. Mother lived on the corner of Quincy & So. Lincoln. She walked every day to work past the gas station, across the street to the drug store.
