François Visinand
ID# 1, b. 18 January 1647
Father* | Estienne Visinand b. 13 Jan 1610 |
Mother* | Andreaz Daunet b. b 1630 |
Birth* | François Visinand was born on 18 January 1647 in Corsier, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.1 |
Marriage* | He married Jeanne Ramus on 3 February 1666 in Corsier, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.1 |
Marriage* | François Visinand married Anna [unknown] after 1678. |
Note* | François Visinand lived in the French speaking region of Switzerland, between Lausanne and Montreux. The Visinand family were winemakers. Author's note: It is said that he had three wives. One wife was said to be Jeanne Ramirez, married 3 Feb 1666, Corsier-Sur-Vere, Switzerland., before 1684. Another of his wives, I have heard, was named Anna, another was said to be called Johanna. The information presented below came from the Quarterly of the Pennsylvania German Society, Volume 12, No. 2, April 1978, page 17-18: In an article 'Schweizer Einwanderer in Edenkoben' published in 'Pfalzische Familien und Wappenkunde,' Band 4, Heft 11 (1963) is the following entry: Visinant (Wissinant), François 'aus dem welschen Schweitzerland bey Lausanne geburtig.' Hofmann im Kloster Heilsbruck. His wife was Anna, and they had a son Philip Peter baptized 13 Apr 1684. In the Hasslock marriage record 12 Apr 1700, Frantz Fisinant married Johanna widow of the deceased Martin------. (Note: this entry was very faded and both dates and names may be inaccurate.) The Wisenandt family settled near Muddy Creek in Lancaster Co., Pa. They were early members of the Reformed church there. In 1743, Johan Peter, Adam, and Peter Wisenandt all signed the Reformed Church Doctrine. John Peter Wissenandt and Maria Magdalena Suni married on 7 Feb 1837 by Rev. John Caspar Stoever. Both Adam and Peter had children baptized in the Muddy Creek Reformed record. In the 1760's the Wisenandts left Pennsylvania and moved to the Lincolnton, North Carolina area. Author's note: Heilsbruck was a convent until 1650, and then became an estate. |

Father* | François Visinand b. 18 Jan 1647 |
Mother* | Anna [unknown] |
Birth* | Philip Peter Visinand was born on 10 April 1684 in Heilsbruck, Edenkoben, Germany. |
Marriage* | He married Anna Helena Neff on 9 July 1710 in Hassloch, Germany.1 |
Death* | Philip Peter Visinand died circa 1744 in Old Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA. |
Note* | Philip Peter Visinand arrived in Philadelphia on 14 Oct 1731 with his wife Allena (Anna Helena), two of his sons John Peter and John Adam. They lived in Colalico Township, in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. They came from Europe aboard the ship 'Lowther.' Lowther was of the class "snow", and has since been referred to in some printed works as "Snow Lowther". I don't know the whereabouts of the other children born in Hassloch, Edenkoben, Germany. (Edenkoben is a small town, approximately 20 miles, or 32 kilometers, southwest of Mannheim, Germany.) Philip Peter obtained a land grant in Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1737. His family attended Muddy Creek Church there. Philip's godfather was A. D. Hardt, a well-known Pharmacist from Neustadt, Germany. Author's note: I obtained Philip's day of birth from Rex James Whisnand. The information presented below on Philip Peter and his children came from the Quarterly of the Pennsylvania German Society, Volume 12, No. 2, April 1978, page 17: "Visanant, Philip Pete Hassloch Snow Lowther, 14 Oct 1731 (S-H, I, pg. 54-57) with John Peter, Allena, John Adam Hassloch Reformed records: Philip Peter Fisenant and his wife Helena had the following children baptized at Hassloch: Anna Maria b. 2 May 1711; bp. 6 May Johann Peter b. 4 Feb. 1714; bp. 7 Feb. Anna Helena Neff
ID# 3, b. before 1695
Birth* | Anna Helena Neff was born before 1695 in Germany; Daughter of Conradt Neff, a weaver. |
Marriage* | She married Philip Peter Visinand, son of François Visinand and Anna [unknown], on 9 July 1710 in Hassloch, Germany.1 |
Death* | Anna Helena Neff died in Lancaster Co., PA. |
Note* | Author's note: The marriage date for Philip and Anna is per Dee Whisenhunt, Chino Valley, AZ. He obtained the date from the Mormon Church Family History Center, 'Evangelisch records.' Their records show Anna Helena's last name as 'Steffen' instead of 'Neff.' The difference in names might be explained by the following quote from The Shoe Cobbler's Kin, volume II, page 19: "Jahrgong 1710: - Philip Peter Visinand Von Cortier aus dem Welschen Schweitzerland mit Jgfr Anna Helena, Conradt Neffen Gemeinsmans V. Webers Alhie ehl. Tochter." (Translation) - Year 1710 Philip Peter Visinand from in the french speaking part of Switzerland, with the single Anna Helena, daughter of Conradt Neff citizen and weaver here. There is no place called Cortier in Switzerland, but there are three Corsier: 1246 Corsier, Geneva Canton 1801 Les Monts-de-Corsier, Vaud Canton 1804 Corsier-sur-Vevey, Vaud Canton (likely this one) The number means the zip code. It is somewhat surprising that his Swiss origin is given although he was born in Heilsbruck, but Swiss people maintain Swiss citizenship also after their emigration, and this may mean that he was still a citizen of his father's town. Author's note: The above information was transcribed literally from The Shoe Cobbler's Kin. I have reprinted it here for those of you who are unable to obtain a copy of this book. As you can see, 'Neffen' has been translated to "Neff." |

C., age 10, born SC Eliza J., age 8, born SC Frances E., age 5, born SC Sarah C., age 3, born SC I feel obligated to relate to you a story that tells of a different ancestral line for Lewis Whisenhunt. (The person I've listed here as a grandson of John Peter.) The story reportedly came from a newspaper article, published in 1971. The article describes an Orangeburg Co., SC, Whisenhunt family reunion. The article was given to me by Rex Whisnant, of Pleasanton, California. The article says 'The local family of Whisenhunts are descended from Lewis Whisenhunt, son of Phillip and Elizabeth Coleman Yssenhunt, the correct early German spelling of the name.' The article goes on to say that Phillip Yssenhunt is buried in Georgia, and his wife Elizabeth, is buried in Missouri. I cannot either confirm or deny this story. I found no record of Phillip Yssenhunt in South Carolina, or Georgia. I found no record of Elizabeth Coleman Yssenhunt, in either South Carolina, Georgia, or Missouri. I found no Whisenhunt families in Missouri. In the 1880 census for Missouri, I did find Whisennand, Whisenand, and Whisenants. I've identified each of those families, and none of their ancestors were from South Carolina. |

Name Variation | John Nicholas Whisenant was also known as John Nicholas Whisenhunt. |
Note* | He left North Carolina around 1770, moving into the Camden District of York County, South Carolina. (See Carpenters A Plenty, by Robert C. Carpenter, p. 34.) He is listed in 1790 South Carolina census. He is in the York County, South Carolina census for 1800, 1810. In the 1820 and 1830 census, John and Mary can be found living with their son Joseph R., in York County, SC. Some of his descendants left the York County area of South Carolina and settled in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. George stayed in South Carolina. If John Nicholas left a will, it was never found. There has been no record of the settlement of his estate. The following is a story about John Nicholas Whisenhunt, which Dr. Eph Whisenhunt presented in his book Whisenhunt Syllabus: In 1805 Nicholas Wisonant sold 20A. to John Hullender (Holland). The said land was the site of the Whisenhunt Grist Mill on High Shoal Branch of King Creek. On Oct. 6, 1780 a group of volunteers from what is now East Tennessee and from the western part of Virginia got together and made plans to meet the British Army at what is called Kings Mountain. The volunteers from the Wautague settlement talked John Adair into lending the group $10,000 of North Carolina tax money to buy horses and supplies to make the trip to Kings Mountain. He had no authority to lend the money, but he believed in the volunteers. When they reached the Grist Mill of John Nicholas Whisenant, he furnished the needed supplies. The following day the volunteers defeated the King's Army under General Ferguson and changed the tide of the British Army which left Ferguson and many of his men dead on the field of battle. The volunteers had done what they set out to do and returned to their homes. The money was repaid and John Adair rejoiced. Many feel that if the British had won at Kings Mountain, the British Army would have defeated other groups and we would not be the great nation we are today. _______________ Dr. Eph Whisenhunt stated that an account of the above story can be found in the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Columbia, South Carolina. The record is Sally's Stub Entries, p. 306, volume O-Q, Order No. 2077. Reference South Carolina Archive AR 8405, pp lg-6q, number of pages 7. |
