He participated in the Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Appennines and Po Valley campaigns. On December 3, 1970 Col. William R. Kugler, commanding officer of 8th Logistical Command in Leghorn, Italy, honored John with a certificate of appreciation for 30 years federal civilian service.
