He joined the Morganton police department in 1930, and left the force in 1934 to join the Morganton Hosiery Mill. He worked as a police officer in Valdese, NC. for a short period between 1934 and 1944. He returned to the police force full-time in 1944. He was appointed Morganton police chief on April 19, 1956. His ill health caused him to retire from the Morganton police force in August 1967 after 27 years of service.
He received his B.A. degree in business education and M.A. in school administration from Appalachian State University. He has worked for the Burke County school system since 1966. He has been a principal at West Concord School and Salem Junior High School. In 1976, Darryl became assistant principal at Drexel Elementary School. In 1990, he was assistant principal at George Hildebrand Elementary School, and in the same year, elected as a Burke County Commissioner.

Daniel Lee Whisnant was killed by his son Thomas Eugene. The shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m., in the road in front of Daniel's house. He was shot in the chest at close range with a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun. Daniel and his son had fought often. Daniel had once bitten off the top of his son's ear during one fight. In another fight, Daniel had shot Thomas in the hip after Thomas shot his father in the foot. On February 18, 1976, Thomas Eugene was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, and sentenced to 12 to 18 years in prison.
