Note*James Gaston Whisenant was 11 years old when he went to live with a Kershaw uncle. He left home at the age of 17 to begin life on his own. He was very tall, 6' 4', a nice looking man with a thick head of gray hair. His father, James Marion, was interested in politics and named James Gaston after an Alabama politician whose name was 'Gaston.'

He was a heavy equipment operator in many construction projects: Water aqueduct from Catskills Mountain to New York city; operated world's largest shovel in eastern coal fields of Kentucky; Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, TN., and many storm and sanitation systems in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. 
NoteHe Note: I ran across a problem with this family when I looked over the 1940 census record. The 1940 census listed as son James, age 16, born in Tennessee, completed 2 years of high school. I must assume this is James Thomas Whisenant, but the age is not consistant with the 1932 birth date I have for him.
