Note* | With his friends, at the age of 16, Kull joined the Navy during W.W.I. From the port of San Francisco he patroled the North Pacific coasts upon the U.S.S. Victoria. After service he traveled the southwestern United States playing cards. Once home, and quite the baseballer, he was the catcher for the Forgan team, when a steak was the only padding for a catcher's mitt. After his marriage he settled into farming. The tuberculosis he caught during the war took a kidney in the 1930s; modern medicine would finally cure him in the 1960s. In 1943, he witnessed a tornado firsthand as it hit the farm. Unable to make it to the house, he grabbed a stake in the ground and made like a flag blowing in the wind, holding on for dear life. No one was hurt, but the chickens returned naked as jaybirds. After World War II he built a home in Liberal, Seward Co., KS, where he was a founding member of the local Elks Lodge. |

Note* | After refusing amputation of an arm from a cotton gin accident in Granite, Oklahoma, Rufus and his family moved again, homesteading north of Forgan, Oklahoma. There, after engaging in farming, he lost his son Clovis from a rattlesnake bite. At Forgan he would open, own and operate both Whisenant's Cash Grocery and a hotel. Burned in an accident with a kerosene light in his hotel in 1914, the right hand crippled by a cotton gin and now the left by fire, Rufus went on and prospered. To this day he is remembered by former employees, friends, family, and others for his fairness, good nature and good will. Rufus loved to hunt and fish and humbly excelled at both. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge. |
