Born in Morganton, North Carolina, on June 13, 1900, he is the son of T. W. C. and Mary Elizabeth (Chapman) Whisnant and is of the Scottish-Irish and German descent. He attended Christ School in Arden, North Carolina from 1914 to 1922; and the University of North Carolina, 1923-27, from which he received the A.B. degree in Education. He was a member of the Golden Fleece at the U.N.C. and a captain of the football team in 1926. Mr. Whisnant married on December 23, 1929. Mrs. Whisnant is the former Pearl Berry Jones of Bellhaven, North Carolina. Mr. Whisnant began his career in the educational field as Athletic Director of the Gastonia City Schools from 1927 to 1930 and at Hoosac School, Hoosick, New York. For the following three years, 1933-35 he was principal of Mt. Olive High School and of Bellhaven High School from 1935 to 1940. Since then, he has served as Superintendant of Thompson Orphanage, an Espiscopal inst. in Charlotte, N.C. He is on the Board of Directors of Child Care Project, U.N.C; State Board of Directors of the Farm Bureau; President of the Mecklenburg County Farm Bureau, 1959-1962; A Director on the Board of Charlotte Rotary Club and of A.B.S. of Mecklenburg Co. He holds membership in Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. Mr. Whisnant is permanent Secretary-Treasurer of the Class of 1927, and was Chairman of Annual Giving, U.N.C. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in Rotary in May 1961 and is President of the Uptown Rotary Club, 1962-63. His political affiliation is with the Democratic Party. Mr. Whisnant is an Episcopalian. A sports-man, he likes to hunt and fish.
